about anti-wrinkle injections

Botulinum Toxin (commonly referred to as botox) treatments are statistically the most popular non-surgical treatments in the world.

Most commonly, anti-wrinkle injections are used for softening deep static lines, but can also be utilised to improve the appearance of hooded eyes, help with TMJ/teeth grinding or clenching, excessive sweating, reduce the appearance of gummy smiles, and even can alleviate migraine symptoms.

Novellus is proud to host premium botulinum toxin brands Botox, Azzulure and Nuceiva; providing versatile products for tailored results.

With the current generation of botulinum toxin products on the market, no. Full results take 10-14 days, however the product begins to kick in around 2-4 days post treatment.

How botox works is by blocking signals from nerves/relaxing the muscles; so making it unsuccessful when your body sends a chemical signal to a muscle to clench.

However, it is important to remember that dosage affects how much the muscle is “relaxed”. At Novellus we aim to keep results natural and avoid the frozen look.

Botulinum Toxin is a temporary relaxant injected directly into the muscle, so will wear off over time.

Depending on the patient and treatment, results last approximately 3-4 months and there must be a minimum of 12 weeks between treatments.

However, if you are using botox treatment to improve the appearance of wrinkles, you will find that as the skin repairs with multiple treatments, the lines won’t bounce back to how severe they were prior to any treatment. The skin healing process can be expedited by combining treatments such as microneedling/skin boosters.

With the products we use in clinic, Botulinum Toxin treatments should not cause any pain. We also use super fine needles to minimise discomfort while treating.

Botulinum Toxin relaxes muscles to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and produce more specialised results like jaw slimming.

Whereas Dermal Filler is made up of Hyaluronic Acid/HA (which is a naturally occurring sugar in the body) and immediately adds volume and plumpness.

So, in short, no. They can both be used to tackle the signs of ageing, but with different aims and results.

No medical treatment is without it’s risks, however, on the whole botox treatments are one of the safest aesthetics treatments on the market.

Education and extensive knowledge of anatomy is essential for the safest practice. Our team has over 50 years of combined medical experience, are trained by the best in the industry, and benefit from ongoing mentoring from our Clinic Director, Dr Steven Land.

It’s incredibly difficult to categorise any one product as superior to any others, simply due to how many variables are in play with any Botulinum Toxin treatment.

Differences in each patient’s anatomy; what area we are targeting; what result we are aiming to achieve are all factors when it comes to choosing our products. This is why the initial consultation is so valuable in your treatment journey, as it gives your practitioner time to properly assess you and plan your treatment appropriately.

When choosing the products we use in clinic, many hours of research and pouring over medical studies & papers, and, of course, our own experience using the products were imperitive in the selection process.

As mentioned, any medical treatment has risks. With Botulinum Toxin treatments, adverse affects tend to be due to dosage or treating a muscle unnecessarily.

Eyelid drooping (ptosis) or “spocky” brows are most common adverse effects, and are easily rectified at your 2 week review appointment.

Worst case scenario is waiting for the toxin to wear off, which usually takes a few weeks as the complication is caused by a tiny amount of product spreading from the injection point.

Unfortunately, in the UK, anyone can administer Botulinum Toxin even though it’s a prescription only medicine.

A doctor, dentist, prescribing nurse or prescribing pharmacist should be prescribing the product for you as an individual patient. This means you should have met the medical professional prescribing your product face to face. However, as the UK lacks any real regulation around aesthetic medicine, this step is often skipped with more unscrupulous practitioners.

At Novellus, we can hold stock as our Clinic Director is a doctor, and our injectors are all medical professionals who can either prescribe from stock or Dr Steven can prescribe while they administer treatment.
