about profhilo

Profhilo represents a paradigm shift in skincare treatments. A novel injectable that works by stimulating the skins’ own repair mechanisms to assist with your anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments. Profhilo counteracts skin laxity, plumps fine lines, and improves hydration & elasticity.

Profhilo is a unique injectable treatment designed to rejuvenate the skin and address signs of aging. It is often described as a “bio-remodeling” or “skin-boosting” treatment.

Growing in popularity since it’s launch in 2015, Profhilo for the face and neck has become a staple for many patients who find that it complements their aesthetics treatments.

In 2022, HA-Derma launched their Profhilo Body option, which allows for a larger volume of product to be distributed to traditionally more difficult areas to treat, such as the abdomen, hands, décolletage, and anywhere else on the body where patients may be suffering from crepey or lax skin. A slow and gradual improvement in the condition, plumpness and hydration occurs over a few weeks.

Profhilo is a new sort of injectable, made of the same, naturally occurring Hyaluronic Acid as traditional fillers but treated in an entirely new way meaning a different mechanism of action.

Smaller chains of hyaluronic acid are only normally be found in the body if damage has occurred, breaking up the normal larger chains. Profhilo introduces these smaller chains in a controlled, slow release way. This stimulates the natural damage receptors and activates the skin’s own repair mechanisms.

With the introduction of Profhilo Body, there’s a multitude of areas we can treat! Including:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Decollage
  • Hands
  • Abdomen (great for mummy tummies post birth, or after substantial weight loss)
  • Upper arms or “bingo wings”
  • Knees
  • Feet
  • Thighs
  • Stretch marks
  • Surgical scars

Profhilo’s peak results are visible around 6 weeks post treatment.

We would recommend 2 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for your initial treatment, then maintenance appointments every 3-4 months (many patients line up their Profhilo and botox maintenance treatments for the same appointment).

Should you stop having Profhilo treatments, your skin won’t automatically defer back to the condition it was before treatment, however our natural collagen and elastin levels will continue to decrease as we age.

There isn’t a specific age that we’d recommend beginning Profhilo treatments; some patients begin younger as a preventative measure, whereas other patients begin later in life when they begin anti-wrinkle injection or dermal filler treatments.

If you’re unsure if Profhilo is for you, book a consultation with one of our medical team and they can advise appropriately.

This question is asked frequently in clinic, and the truthful answer is that although Profhilo and Dermal Fillers are both Hyaluronic Acid products, they are designed to do very different things.

So, arguably they cannot be compared. Profhilo will improve skin health and texture, reduce skin laxity and stimulate more elastin production; whereas dermal fillers are designed to restore or add volume.

Profhilo is first and foremost a skin treatment; it doesn’t have the volumising capabilities required to lift jowls or restore substantial volume in the midface.

We often use an analogy of a cake; if a patient is younger and still has substantial fat pads in the face, Profhilo is the beautiful icing on top to create a gorgeous cake. However, if there is volume loss in the face – which occurs as we age as fat pads shrink and drop – then the icing can still be added, but it won’t disguise a sunken cake underneath.

For patients who have experienced volume loss and often look in the mirror and feel like they look tired or droopy, Profhilo won’t be a fix-all. However, Profhilo can be used in conjunction with our volumising treatments like cheek fillers and our combination treatments!

Profhilo is a relatively safe treatment option.

Most adverse effects – while extremely rare – are due to the nature of how the product is administered and how well the patient adheres to our aftercare instructions. Swelling at the injection points or swollen nodules under the skin can occur. Occasionally, a patient can experience infection of the injection sites; this is simply due to some form of bacteria finding its way into where the needle has broken the skin, and is mostly avoidable with appropriate hygiene practice post treatment.

An even rarer side effect can be allergic reaction, which is why it is so important to have a medical professional administer Profhilo, as they will be able to appropriately treat any reaction.

As with many medical aesthetics treatments, there is no legislation or regulation to police who can and can’t administer Profhilo.

However, the manufacturer HA-Derma only supplies reputable pharmacies who have systems in place to avoid non-medical professionals purchasing the product. And, if a non-medic were to try to place an order directly with HA-Derma (as we do), they would be turned away.

HA-Derma released information in early 2023 revealing that unlicensed imitation products are being distributed by unscrupulous providers, however we cannot be sure what these products are made up of and of their safety rating. Which is why it is so important for patients to know that they are being treated by someone reputable, who answers to a regulatory body such as the GMC/NMC/GDC/GenPharmC, so if they use any inappropriate products and cause an issue, they are held to account.

technical information

Profhilo is a revolutionary skin treatment that combines the benefits of hyaluronic acid (HA) with a specialised injection technique. HA is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that plays a vital role in maintaining skin hydration and elasticity. Profhilo utilises a high concentration of pure HA, which is injected into specific points on your face or body to stimulate a rejuvenating response within your skin.

Unique Composition: What sets Profhilo apart is its patented hybrid complex, which contains a unique blend of high- and low-molecular-weight HA. The high molecular weight HA provides immediate hydration to the skin’s deeper layers, while the low molecular weight HA diffuses more superficially, optimizing hydration in the upper layers. This combination allows Profhilo to effectively address both deep and superficial skin concerns.

Injection Technique: Profhilo is administered by a trained healthcare professional using a series of precise injections in specific areas of your skin. These injection points are strategically chosen to ensure the even distribution of the product and maximize its effects. The technique used is often referred to as the “BAP” (Bio Aesthetic Points) technique, which is designed to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin.

Bio-remodeling Effect: Once injected, Profhilo spreads within the skin due to its unique texture and fluidity. It acts as a bio-remodeling agent, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins responsible for skin firmness, elasticity, and overall youthfulness. The presence of Profhilo in the skin triggers a “bio-stimulating” effect, encouraging your skin to naturally regenerate and improve its structure over time.

Skin Benefits: Profhilo offers a range of benefits for your skin. It improves skin hydration by attracting and retaining moisture, resulting in a smoother and plumper appearance. Additionally, the stimulation of collagen and elastin production helps to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Profhilo can also enhance skin tone and texture, leading to a fresher, more radiant complexion.

Treatment Sessions: A typical Profhilo treatment involves two sessions, spaced approximately four weeks apart. This initial course of treatment allows for optimal results. Depending on your individual needs, your medical aesthetics prationer may recommend maintenance treatments at intervals of three to six months to sustain the effects over time.

Minimal Downtime: One of the advantages of Profhilo is its minimal downtime. Most individuals can resume their regular activities immediately after treatment. You may experience some mild redness, tenderness, or small bumps at the injection sites, but these usually resolve quickly on their own.
